Problem 1: Compound wall

Part A:

Figure below shows a small compound wall that has to be constructed.

 The sequence is as follows

 Excavation -> laying of footings (starts after excavation activity finishes) -> Laying of plinth beam (starts after footing activity finishes) -> column casting (starts one day after the start of footing activity)             ->brickwork activity (starts one day after start of column activity) -> plastering of walls &columns (starts after brick work activity finishes)  ->painting of walls& columns (starts after plastering activity finishes)

 The duration, start date, end date and cost of each activity is given in the table below. Draw a Gantt chart showing the

(i)                 Activity timeline

(ii)               Daily cost of work

(iii)             Cumulative cost curves.

              (Activity cost may be assumed distributed equally along  activity duration) 

Part B:

Table given below shows the activities, predecessor relationship for compound wall. Here the brickwork, plastering and painting is done for each section as a separate activity.

Do the forward pass, backward pass for the network

Part C :    Find

  • Whether the activities are critical (Y/N)
  • Critical path
  • Total float, Free float, Interfering float and independent float for each activity  

       (Note*: negative Independent float should be  considered  as zero)

Part – D: 

For the resource histogram developed in PART-A now the column activity has a float of 2 days, the Labor resource requirement for each activity is 2 persons/day and the daily resource limit of 4 persons/day.  

a)      Draw a resource loaded bar chart and histogram and highlight resource over location.

b)      Draw a resource loaded bar chart and histogram and show the over allocation can be solved using floats.

Problem 2: Two span bridge

Part – A:

Picture below shows a two span bridge. The activities for construction of the bridge with relationships is listed in table 1. Draw the network diagram showing the relationships

 Do the forward pass and backward pass , find the critical activities  and  floats ( Total float, free float, interfering float and independent float )

Using the float of Activity 2(cast beams), illustrate by means of histogram and bar chart how would you level the resource?
